She tells me more, but I don’t hear any of her words. I sink back on my heels, weeping hard. Thank God she’s on her way to pick me up because there’s no way I’d be able to get anything done now. It’s all impossible. How can I file paperwork and photocopy stuff when the father of my child, the man who doesn’t even know that he’s going to become a dad, is dying? Killing himself every day.

Guilt floods me. Perhaps I could have changed things if I’d just been honest with him. Knowing that I’m pregnant could be the thing to straighten out his path, and I denied him of that. I hate myself for that, I’ll never be able to forgive myself.

“What do I do?” I gasp, needing Madison to give me answers more than ever before. “How can I help? What can I do to make things right?”

Unfortunately, Madison is silent for a beat too long. For the first time ever, it seems like she doesn’t have any answers for me. I can’t stand that. If my best friend doesn’t have anything for me, then I really am screwed. My heart pumps so violently fast that I can’t contain myself.

I’m cracking at the seams, genuinely falling apart. I don’t know how I can even begin to put myself back together. I don’t think there’s a way. I sob harder, so hard I can’t get any words out. Madison doesn’t say anything either, but she stays on the phone with me, just to be with me the whole time as she comes to get me.

I hate feeling this way. I want to be strong and powerful. I want to be everything I’ve silently promised my baby I will be. But that version of me feels absolutely miles away. I don’t know if I’ll ever manage to be her. Not with all these setbacks flinging in front of me at every turn. I don’t stand a chance.
